What is an FD Calculator?
An FD calculator estimates the maturity amount and interest earned on a bank or post office fixed deposit. Enter the deposit amount, interest rate, tenure and compounding frequency, and the calculator instantly shows what your FD will be worth when it matures.
Fixed deposits remain one of India's most popular low-risk investments. Use this calculator to compare FD rates across banks, choose the right tenure and see how much more a cumulative FD earns through compounding.
How to use the FD Calculator
- 1Enter the deposit amount you want to invest.
- 2Enter the interest rate offered by the bank (senior citizens usually get 0.25–0.75% more).
- 3Choose the tenure in years and additional months.
- 4Select the compounding frequency — most Indian banks compound quarterly.
- 5Read the maturity value and interest, and open the year-wise breakdown.
FD Calculation Formula
- A
- — Maturity amount
- P
- — Deposit (principal) amount
- r
- — Annual interest rate ÷ 100
- n
- — Compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly)
- t
- — Tenure in years
Example: ₹1 lakh FD at 7% for 5 years (quarterly compounding)
| Deposit amount | ₹1,00,000 |
|---|---|
| Interest earned | ₹41,478 |
| Maturity value | ₹1,41,478 |
With quarterly compounding, 7% a year works out to an effective annual yield of about 7.19%.
Types of fixed deposits
- Cumulative FD — interest is reinvested and paid at maturity; earns the most.
- Non-cumulative FD — interest is paid out monthly or quarterly for regular income.
- Tax-saver FD — 5-year lock-in; deposits up to ₹1.5 lakh qualify for Section 80C (old regime).
- Senior citizen FD — higher interest rates for depositors aged 60 and above.
Tax on FD interest
FD interest is fully taxable at your income slab rate. Banks deduct TDS at 10% once your yearly interest crosses ₹50,000 (₹1 lakh for senior citizens). If your total income is below the taxable limit, submit Form 15G (or 15H for seniors) to avoid TDS. Remember that post-tax FD returns may be close to inflation, so FDs work best for short-term goals and emergency funds.
